DIY Disinfectant Surface Cleanser

One of my favorite things to do in the spring is clean! I love cleaning out closets and purging my life of things I no longer use. It is a very gratifying experience. Keeping my home clean is very therapeutic for me. That being said, I am very particular of the chemicals I use in my home. As I get older I am trying to be more cognizant of the chemicals I put into my body and what I use to keep my home sanitary. While there are some really great all natural products on the market, they can be costly.

After doing some extensive research into different DIY cleansers I finally found a disinfectant that not only cleans and sanitizes, it does not leave behind any harmful chemicals. Essential oils are a great way to naturally treat minor illnesses or freshen your home, but they also have some great cleansing benefits. One of my favorite essential oils is Tea Tree Oil. The skin benefits alone are magic. Tea tree oil is also antibacterial and antimicrobial so it sanitizes and also freshens your space.

Initially, I created my all natural disinfectant to aid in cleaning my refrigerator. You should never use artificial or harsh chemicals, especially when cleaning your refrigerator. Your food can become contaminated and take on the scent or taste of whatever you used to clean your fridge. Pairing Tea Tree Oil and White Distilled Vinegar creates the perfect all natural disinfectant. It thoroughly sanitizes and is inexpensive to keep the ingredients on hand. Now I know vinegar has quite a pungent scent, but I don’t mind it and it typically dissipates quickly. More importantly, it will not affect the food in your refrigerator. I have enjoyed using it so much I have started using it to sanitize my counter tops and for everyday purposes.

Instructions:

In a spray bottle (I love using my glass spray bottle from the Grove Collaborative) Add equal parts white distilled vinegar and distilled water.

*TIP:* You do not have to purchase distilled water. To make you own, boil water on the stove then allow to completely cool. This process will kill any bacteria your water might have.

Add 5-7 drops of 100% pure tea tree oil to your white stilled vinegar and distilled water mixture. Give it a gentle shake and you are ready to go!

Let me know if you have a favorite all natural cleanser that you love to use!

Happy disinfecting!
